BARDO MOVIE NO. 2 - Beetlejuice

(1988) Tim Burton USA

So as part of our Two Dead Girls initiative, each week we are watching a "bardo" movie. Last week was Enter the Void By Gaspar Noe. You can read about it here. This week is Alka's choice so we are doing Beetlejuice.

Some history on why this movie is so important to me is that whenever I was sick as a little girl I would always stay at home with lollipops, ginger ale, and Beetlejuice.

Beetlejuice stars Alec Baldwin as Adam, Geena Davis as Barbara, Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz, Jeffrey Jones as Charles Deetz, Glenn Shadix as Otho, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice.

I didn't know what to really say about this movie. It veers off the beaten track for what I usually discuss and the best part about this movie can't be talked about, it has to be seen to be appreciated so I made tiny gifs of all my favorite parts.

But first, I just want to mention that there is a real book called The Handbook for the Recently Deceased. I happen to own it. It was written by Dr. Claude Needham Ph.D. A doctor in quantum physics and microbiology.

How cool is that?

Mine has a cute doodle on the inside. <3

So here it is! My top favorite moments of Tim Burton's Beetlejuice.

I can agree that cleaning up dust forever could potentially be probably one of the worst things you could throw at me.

See that dust cloud? :@

I love that Otho actually does see Adam out of the corner of his eye. Otho actually might be a psychic, just one whose overcome with ego.

So Emo.

"I heard. Tore your faces right off. It obviously doesn't do any good to pull your heads off in front of people if they can't see you."

Does anyone actually remember who Ozzie and Harriet were?

These Guys

Such a babe.

AFI stole this line for their song The Despair Factor which makes it even more emo than before. +10 Props if you know it.

"In designer sheets no less"

"Sleeping with Prince Valium." She scared the ghosts.

Trip to the Bardos begins.

Well... That's one way to make an entrance.

This cracks me up every time.

Apparently this scene was cut out of the Disney version... I wonder why. XD

"Not sure if this is the right environment for Lydia."

So romantic.

A softer side of Delia Deetz?

Thing One

Thing Two

= <

Who else actually wanted them to get married?

Hands down my favorite scene in the whole movie.

Really love the set up of this scene. Keaton's posture is great.

All is well that ends well, even for you doubting Thomas'.

Tune in next week for our Bardo Movie No. 3, Chris Marker's La Jetée.

See you then!
